A recent study showed that 35% of Americans over 40 have some sort of inner ear or vestibular problem. Most of the time this is associated with vertigo or dizziness. 35%! So over 1/3 of Americans over 40 have some degree of inner ear problem, vestibular, balance issues or vertigo. We have had a lot of people that have come in our office that have gotten incredible results. Now you're probably thinking, "What does upper cervical chiropractic have to do with inner ear problems or with vertigo or with dizziness?" Well, it's really quite simple. You see, there are no nerves that come off the brain. All the nerves that innervate the head, face and neck, your vision, your taste, your smell, your hearing, your balance, come from nerves that come off of the brainstem and there are 12 cranial nerves come off each side of the brainstem and they go up and they innervate the head, face, and neck.
There's one particular nerve called the vestibular cochlear nerve that goes from the ear to the brainstem down at the top of your neck and then goes to the brain. That nerve sends the messages to the brain about what's going on with the ear. It’s called the vestibulocochlear nerve. Vestibular is the balance. Cochlear is hearing. It starts off as two branches, comes together as one and then goes to the brain stem, and sends messages to the brain. Now, what you'll find is most of the time with balance issues, even hearing issues, ringing in the ear, vertigo, is that when they check the ear, they don't see a problem with the ear. But what's happened is somewhere between the ear and the brain, the brain is getting a message of dizziness, or vertigo, sometimes ringing in the ears, loss of hearing, and somehow that message is getting altered before it gets to the brain. To give the brain the sensation of dizziness.
Now, what we have found is if one of the upper bones in the neck is out of its normal position it can actually misalign to the point that it can put pressure at the nerve or at the insertion of the nerve onto the brainstem so that, like stepping on a garden hose, that message gets altered when it gets to the brain telling the brain something different from what the ear initially intended. That different message creates the confusion that can cause the brain or to give you the sensation of dizziness, of vertigo.
Now if we find that there's a bone there putting pressure at the brainstem, if we can correct the position of that bone, real simple, no yanking, twisting of the head, a very simple, specific movement of the bone back where it's supposed to be, now all of a sudden, like pulling your foot off of the garden hose, the message from the ear gets to the brain unimpeded, unaltered, now you get the normal sensation the ear's trying to give you of normal balance, no dizziness, no vertigo, no potential ringing in the ears or altered hearing.
You have to think that if you have vertigo or you have dizziness, there's got to be something going on within you. You don't have a drug deficiency that causes the dizziness. There's got to be something happening within you. Now, I strongly urge you to find an upper cervical doctor near you. Let them check this area out. Because if that's the problem, it's such a simple fix. No negative side effects whatsoever, just remove the misalignment, remove the interference, the altered message to the brain and the message normalizes.
