talkan katliamı TIFF Next Wave presents: GAY MEAN GIRLS

Join us for the launch of the queer coming-of-age web series Gay Mean Girls, which follows prom committee member Lucy Ching (Vicky Li) as she seeks to understand her sexuality, charm her best friend Miranda, and fit in with the gay community. Based on a viral short film that earned over 3.5 million hits on YouTube, the project was written and directed by queer women of colour.

Creator Heyishi Zhang and lead actor Vicky Li will introduce the screening. It will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Heyishi Zhang, cinematographer and co-producer Hayley Wong, writer A.C. Liu, and producer Maddy Falle, moderated by TIFF Next Wave Committee member Olivia Coombs.

Heyishi Zhang
Heyishi Zhang is an award-winning Chinese Canadian filmmaker. She studied film at Ryerson University, where she was the co-founder and president of the Ryerson Alliance of Women Filmmakers. Her first short, Gay Mean Girls (15), reached over 3.5 million views online and has since expanded into a web series. Her thesis project, Joy (15), has been screened internationally and received numerous awards. Her work often examines the politics of identity and its influence on beauty.

Hayley Wong
Hayley Wong is an emerging cinematographer who is passionate about shooting under-represented subjects in mainstream media. Her current body of work focuses on queer- and women-led films, including the viral short film Gay Mean Girls (15). Wong hopes to inspire other queer women of colour to get behind the camera and express themselves through cinema.

Vicky Li
Vicky Li is an emerging Toronto-based actor. Currently in grade 10, she began her acting career with involvement in theatre productions at her performing arts high school, such as playing Antigone in The Burial at Thebes and managing production on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The web series Gay Mean Girls (19) has been her first experience acting in front of the camera, and she’s thrilled to have been able to work with such a welcoming and lovely team.

Maddy Falle
Maddy Falle is a producer and the Development Manager at Gearshift Films. She previously worked in business affairs on television shows like NHL Revealed (14), Hockey Wives (15– ), and Workin’ Moms (17– ). In 2015 she was a producer on the short film Gay Mean Girls, and in 2017 she received WIFT’s CBC Business of Broadcast Mentorship. She is a graduate of Ryerson’s School of Image Arts, where she was won the Norman Jewison Filmmaker Award and the HSBC Filmmaker Award.
